Student Aid and Veterans’ Education Benefits

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): Students attending post-secondary institutions (community colleges, technical schools, universities, etc.) are likely eligible for financial aid through the government in the form federal grants, work study and/or low-interest loans. To complete the FAFSA, you must apply for a Federal Student Aid pin that acts as your electronic signature: apply through the U.S. Department of Education’s Pin website. If you electronically file  your federal taxes for FREE using TBB (either counselor-assisted or through the Self-Serve portal) and then complete the FAFSA, TBB will automatically move the pertinent information from your tax forms into your FAFSA application, thus making the process that much easier!

Veterans’ Education and Training Benefits: American military veterans have access to a variety of education benefit programs.
Many vets, and some active duty officers, may be eligible for more than one program. Eligibility and benefit amount depends on a variety of factors, including type of service, length of service, date of service, disability status, and discharge status. Generally speaking, veterans can only receive education benefits from one program at a time. Depending on the program selected, a veteran may be asked to give up eligibility for all other education benefits. It’s important for service members to understand the eligibility rules and benefits of each program, so that they can make an informed choice about the education benefit they select.

Voter Registration: To vote in federal elections you must be a U.S. citizen and 18 years old. To vote in North Carolina you must prove that you have lived in NC for 30 days prior to the election and not be registered to vote in another state. Claim your rights and register to vote!

Student Aid, Veterans’ Education Benefits and Voter Registration applications can be completed at a TBB-NC site with a trained benefits counselor or from your home or office using the Self-Serve option.
