NC DSS Updates Application Process for Energy Assistance

The North Carolina Division of Social Services has updated the application process and eligibility requirements for the state’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) in accordance with changes mandated by the legislature.

Here is what you need to know:

  • Households enrolled in Food and Nutrition Services (food stamps) will NOT be automatically enrolled in LIEAP.
  • ALL households must meet income and resource eligibility requirements and apply directly for LIEAP funds. A TBB-NC site can help you complete this application.
  • Energy payments will now be made directly to the service provider (power, gas, or oil company) providing the utility.
  • Persons age 60 or older and disabled persons (receives SSI, SSA, or VA disability) will receive priority.
  • After January 31, 2012, any remaining funds will be given to other eligible households.
